The Savvy Stylist: Shopping 101

by Dawn Mellon

Lists are a funny thing. Inclusion can be a good thing if it means getting into an exclusive party. Or, it can be a bad thing if it means being on one of the many published "Worst Dressed Lists." In this case, yourlist is the next step in getting your wardrobe ready for the season. Now that you've organized your closet (as I outlined in La Mode's Spring 2010 issue), it's time to put together a well-thought-out shopping list.

The Classics
First, your list should include any classic pieces that you don't already have, including:
            – a little black dress
            – a great white blouse
            – an equally great white t-shirt
            – a 3-piece black suit
            – a pair of great-fitting jeans
            – black slacks
            – neutral slacks
            – a trench coat
            – a pearl necklace
            – a neutral-colored handbag

The Completers
Next, pull out all of the pieces that you have that need something to make them a complete outfit. That "something" could be a top to go with a skirt or a pair of shoes to go with a dress. Or maybe you have a great outfit but still need just the right accessories. Add those items to your list.

The Replacements
Now, take a careful look at the pieces in your wardrobe and determine what needs to be replaced. You have a great white blouse, for example, but it's a little more yellow than white. Or maybe your black slacks have surpassed their useful life and need to be retired.

The Trends
Finally, your list should reflect the trendy pieces with which you'd like to update your wardrobe. When it comes to trendy pieces, keep in mind:
            – embrace only those trends that flatter your figure.
            – don't limit yourself with clothing – you can incorporate trends into your wardrobe with accessories such as handbags, shoes, belts, jewelry, etc.
            – pair inexpensive trendy pieces with investment-level pieces to create an overall upscale look.
            – consider your hairstyle and your makeup - if either is dated, your overall look will be as well, despite your trendy outfit.

Budget
Establishing a budget is the final step before setting out on your shopping adventure. It's wise to establish an overall budget and also to have an idea of how much you want to spend on each item on your list. Follow these guidelines:
            – invest in the classics
            – don't invest a lot in trendy pieces that will likely go out of style next year
            – pair inexpensive trendy pieces with investment-level pieces to create an overall upscale look
            – your wardrobe should reflect your lifestyle; if you work full-time, 70% of your wardrobe should be dedicated to work-appropriate clothing

You have your list. And you have your budget. Now, it's time to go shopping! Look for my next column in La Mode's Fall 2010 issue, in which I'll share some valuable shopping tips.
