Tips From a Shopping Guru

By Lauren Kent

We asked Jennifer Hyde, a 17-year cosmetologist turned personal shopper, image consultant and fashion stylist, how to surf the racks like a style sensei. Follow these sure-fire tips for the greatest (and cheapest!) personal wardrobe.

1.  Don’t shop under pressure.  If you have an impending event you still haven’t bought an outfit for, or if weekend crowds are intimidating, you might be under pressure. Shop on a random Monday or Tuesday instead, and leave plenty of time before your dress-up date.

2.  Take the right shoes and undergarments along with you when you shop. This can save you a trip to the tailor or maybe even from an outfit malfunction later.

3.   Buy only things you love. If you don’t love it in the dressing room, you won’t love it next year when it’s hanging in your closet with the tags still on. If you love it on the hanger, but not on your figure, it’s best to leave it at the store.

4.   Consider fabrics and the care involved in cleaning, storing, and wearing them.  For instance, I don’t care to iron, don’t even own one. Check to see what fabric the garment is made of: does it require dry cleaning, hand washing, air drying, etc?  Be aware of these things before you take it home.

5.   Learn to shop the thrift, consignment, and vintage shops.  These stores can be a treasure trove of all tastes and styles.  If you’re conservative and traditional, you might luck up on a great designer blazer for less than $10.  If you like funky, outrageous pieces, you could find a red cashmere beaded and sequined crop sweater with a peter pan collar for $7 (I did that once! Still have it. Still wear it.)

6.   Spend your big bucks on staple pieces and less on trendy ones.  Little black dress, spend the bucks.  Wild leopard print sun-dress with the asymmetrical hemline, not so much. This summer, big bags, slightly chunky, super high-heeled sandals, and anything fuchsia will be hot.  You can find these items at discount retailers and at the very exclusive boutiques—it’s up to you where you shop and where you invest your fashion dollars.

7.   Have Fun.  I prefer to shop alone on Monday afternoons.  It’s meditative for me. Remember, shopping should be fun, so if it’s still not any fun for you after using the above rules, consider hiring a personal shopper.  This person is a professional and can dramatically ease the pain of shopping.
